Thousands of Invalids (lather Twice a Year to Implore Inter cession of the Martyr. In a little church near Jerusa lem, on the site of the ancient Cap hargamala, thousands of the halt and lame gather semi-annually to celebrate the Festival of the find inc of St. Stephen's relics, to naze on the bones of the first Christian martyr and to beg his intercession for the relief of their ailments. Si, Stephen was one of ihe dis ciples of Jesus and al'ier the ascen sion was chosen one of the seven deacons. 1'or his adherence to the new faith he was stoned to death, In the calendar ol saints he has two festivals, falling on December 26 and August 3, that of the latter date commemorating the finding of his relics. After St. Stephen's martyrdom his body lay concealed under the ruins of an old lonih at Capharga mala, 20 miles from Jerusalem. At this place, early in ihe fifth cen tury, the church was served by a venerable priest named Lueian. According to tradition, Lucian was twice visited by a vision of St, Stephen, who revealed the hiding place of his bones. The priest laid the matter before the bishop of Je rusalem, who ordered him to search for the body of the first saint at the place indicated. The coffin was found and when opened, according to chroniclers, "there came out of it such a sw eet odor that no one remembered to have ever smelted anything so agreeable." A "vast multitude" had assembled, and, it is said, 73 persons present, who were afflict ed with various ailments, were immediately cured and made well again. A portion of the relics were left at Caphargamala, and the remainder taken to Jerusalem and interred in the Church of Sion. Fifteen centuries have passed since the relics of ihe holy protomartyr have been thought to possess mi raculous healing powers. They have a handy engine to run the saw, while they rest and plan for next summer's work. That engine is about the busiest and most convenient machine the wise man has on his farm. It pumps water for him, runs the sepa rator, washing machine, feed grinder, corn sheller, and grindstone. Often it runs a hay press, ensilage cutter, small thresher, or a repair shop. The year round it drudges for him, saving the man's strength for more prof itable things. And the wisest man has an I H C Oil and Gas Engine because it does most for him at least cost. Its simplicity renders it almost trouble-proof. Its construction makes it easy to start and to oper ate, and it is most economical in fuel consump tion. It is made of best material, and when necessary it will deliver 10 to 30 per cent above its rated horse power. I H C responsibility for the engine lasts all the years it is in service. I I1C engines are made in all styles verti cal and horizontal, portable, stationary and skidded, air and water cooled. There are pumping, sawing and spraying outfits. Sizes from 1 to 50-horse power, to operate on gas, gasoline, naphtha, distillate, kerosene, and alcohol. Oil tractors, 6-12 to 30-60 -horse power for plowing, threshing, etc. The I II C local dealer will show you the engines and tell you all about them. Somewhere the river of eternal life Flows crystal clear beside a great white throne; Somewhere, my soul, beyond this earthly strife, Sweet music swells within a distant home, Upon whose streets of gold the dawn above Has risen in an endless day of love. Somewhere there is a calm, the tempests cease, The waves lie still upon the ocean's breast; Somewhere an angel, stooping, whispers, "Peace," And, lo ! the ships pass safely into rest, While from afar the glory of the throne Falls on the weary voyagers coming home. Somewhere the heart has ceased to throb in pain, The bitter tears have all been wiped away; Somewhere our lips will learn another strain, To mingle with a new, glad melody, 'Till through eternity the joyful song Is echoed by a countless white-robed throng. Somewhere my Saviour, too, will wait for me, With nail-pierced hands outstretched to bring me home; Somewhere the anthem of eternity Across the tossing billows shall be borne, To still my fears until the storm is past, And in the calm my ship comes home at last. ALL THE WAY. When you come to a wearisome bit of the road, Where the stones are thick and the path is steep, And the back is bowed with the heft of the load, As the narrowing away is hard to keep, Don't stop just then for a wasteful sigh, But challenge the worst with steadfast cheer; If nowhere else, there is help on high God's angel will hasten your pioneer. When you reach a lonesome bit of the road, Curtained about with mist and murk, And you hear faint sounds from the dread above, Where shivering, grim hobgoblins lurk, Just laugh to scorn iheir doleful cries This is the place to whistle and sing; Brush the fog from your eyes, And clo?e to the faith of your fathers cling. When you stand at a sorrowful bit of the road, And a hand you loved has loosed its clasp; When streams are dry that in sweetness flowed, And tlowers drop from your listless grasp; B'en now take heart, for further on There is hope and joy and the dawn of day, You shall find again what you thought was gone; 'Tis the merry heart goes all the way.
